We've Asked Business Owners About One Page Websites - Here's What They Told Us

There's an endless debate among the website owners if a one page website is the best solution for their business. Some of them say that it is not the best solution from an SEO perspective, others think that it's a great way to enhance user experience, so we decided to ask a couple of business owners and here's what they say:

Lachlan Wells from Optimising

I have to say I wouldn't recommend a one-page site for SEO.

The big reason for this is that by placing all of your content on the one page, it's less clear to Google what the page is about, so you're likely to rank for fewer keywords. By clearly separating information into different pages (about us, contact, products etc.) you're giving Google more specific pages, which increases the likelihood that they'll closely match a search query. As well as ranking for more keywords, you can also have multiple pages appear in the same search results, giving you more chances of a click-through.

One-page sites can also be bad for load time, with all of the content in one place there's a lot more to download. There's also a usability argument. Separate pages make it easier to navigate and find information, as well as share links.

The only exception is you can use an infinite scroll plugin, which uses javascript to load another page of content at the bottom of the screen. So it has the effect of everything being on the one page, but you're actually loading new pages. To do this properly, you need to use the HTML5 pushState() method to keep Google happy.

We do not agree with Lachlan when it comes to load time, becauese our websites are quick to load, but we must admit that not all of them are, and that he may have a point there.

Irina Iliescu from Remote Workmate has a different point of view.

Irina is an online communications specialist at Remote Workmate, and http://remoteworkmate.com/ is a one-page website running on WordPress.

They insisted on using a one page website because it is their belief that people get more distracted these days than they were a few years ago. Someone from Intel said once that as content becomes free and media becomes free, the only truly priceless commodity is attention.

If you're selling something, you've got a few seconds to make your pitch. With a one-page website, you allow people to scroll (one single action) to what draws their attention. You can't have the benefits of your product tucked away in another page of you website.

The biggest benefit of having a one-page website is that it forces you to drop the unecessary text because you don't have enough space for that.

"If you're running a business that has just one thing to sell, a one-page website is what you need. If you're offering complex services or hundreds of products you can't use a one-page website.", she added.

What have we concluded from these two opinions?

SEO is important, and even though many experts are not advising one page websites, there is still a way for Google to understand and rank your content, especially now after the quality update which highlights user experience. Take a look at what Texas government did.

If you're thinking about switching to a one-page website, make sure you understand what exactly convinces your clients to buy/subscribe/contact you. You need to get this right, and it's OK to test out a few ideas before settling for a main call to action.

Here are some very clear call to action solutions we implemented on our templates

Wda is a fully responsive template of high quality, ideal for a personal or a company portfolio. It has only one call to action, which is centered around the portfolio and with clear conversion principle.

Or Sano, a template for medical facilities with a clear call to action centered around making an appointment, the most important action for the business.

What do you think? Why have you chosen a one page website?
